FOR the first time the JAC is selecting judges mainly to hear a range of welfare appeals in the Upper Tribunal, Administrative Appeals Chamber.
Date: 01 December 2011
The tribunal acts as a specialist court of appeal for social security matters, but also in a variety of other areas including mental health, special educational needs, care standards, cases barring individuals from working with children and vulnerable adults and regulatory matters (including information rights). It decides applications for permission to appeal and appeals, almost exclusively on points of law and mainly on paper - in social security matters there are few oral hearings.
