You must ensure you provide all the information about your education and qualifications. Please do not forget to include dates.

Qualities and Abilities - Self Assessment

This is an extremely important part of your application. Please be concise, as any information in excess of two pages will not be used to support your application. Bullet points and note form are acceptable.

In preparing your self assessment it is important to remember that this is a critical part of your application.  Before completing this section, review the qualities and abilities provided in the application form and consider why you are suitable for the post, relating your qualities and abilities to those provided as fully as possible.

At every stage of the selection process we will be assessing you on one or more of these qualities and abilities. It is these and only these that the selection panel are assessing. We are not concerned with whether you are a member of ILEX, solicitor or barrister, where you went to university, where you practice, your gender or ethnic origin.

This assessment is your opportunity to expand on the information you have given us about your career history and provide more than a reiteration of your CV.

When preparing this please consider the following:

  • make sure that you provide specifics when providing your examples.  It is not enough to talk generally about a situation and what happened - we need to know specifically what your thinking was, what actions you took and how you handled the situation.
  • be explicit when writing your examples so that there is no room for doubt about how you personally have tackled something.  Do not assume that the person reading your form will be able to infer, from your description, what your role was and what specifically you were responsible for.
  • keep your answers concise and to the point. It is not worth spending most of your example describing the situation while leaving little room for the most relevant pieces of information - what you did.  It is important that the focus is on you - your actions and your responsibilities - not the situation as a whole.
  • provide examples to demonstrate how your skills match the qualities and abilities sought at the appropriate level for the role for which you are applying.

Character

Please read the guidance carefully before completing this section.

Please also note that applicants for judicial appointment are not protected by sections 4(2) and 4(3) of the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and convictions which would normally be regarded as having expired under that Act should therefore be declared in writing (Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975).

It is essential that you answer all the following questions fully. You are required to declare all matters whether or not these have been declared in a previous application or to any other body. Please include comparable information for all jurisdictions relevant to you and your work. Where you have answered yes, please include any mitigating information you would like the JAC Commissioners to take into account when considering your application. If you are in any doubt please include all relevant information.

You also have a duty to tell the JAC about any new information relating to your character which might arise up to the point of appointment.
