Prepare to sit a qualifying test
Below are a few suggestions you may find helpful when preparing to sit a qualifying test.
Before you take the test
- Take time to understand what a qualifying test is - and is not.
- Of the qualities and abilities set out in the application form the test will principally assess intellectual capacity, authority and communication skills and efficiency.
- It is not a test of your detailed legal knowledge or a test of advocacy skill.
- Remind yourself of good examination techniques. It may have been many years since you last sat a test under time pressure.
- Read past test papers and their supporting documentation available on this website. This will familiarise you with the general format and type of content used by the Commission for qualifying tests, but don't expect the test you sit to be exactly the same.
- Practice your time management and ability to work under pressure by completing past papers under timed exam conditions.
- Read the Examiners' Feedback Reports for past qualifying tests on our website. The Feedback Report is designed to help candidates understand what characterised a successful test paper. It also gives examples of where candidates performed poorly, and the identification and analysis of common problems.
- Read and remember the preparation advice given in the Candidate Information Pack and the letter inviting you to to sit a qualifying test.
- Volunteer to take part in a JAC dry run of a qualifying test.
Sitting the test

- Do not recite the facts in your answer unless you are asked to do so.
- Use bullet points when told to do so.
- Always make sure that your answers/decisions are evidenced and reasoned.
- Ensure you come to a decision where asked to do so.
- If completing the test in manuscript, make sure your handwriting is legible.
