The office of Senior District Judge (Chief Magistrate) is a demanding judicial leadership and management role. There is a requirement to be on call for sensitive and high profile cases, terrorist cases and extradition cases, sometimes at unsociable hours.

The Senior District Judge (Chief Magistrate) currently has responsibility for:

  • hearing many of the sensitive, long or complex cases and in particular extradition and special jurisdiction cases
  • supporting and guiding District Judge (Magistrates' Courts) colleagues and securing their co-operation
  • liaising with the senior judiciary and Presiding Judges on matters relating to Magistrates' Courts and District Judges of the Magistrates' Courts.
