The JAC has been asked to identify 3 candidate for the post of Resident Judge of the First-tier Tribunal, Immigration and Asylum Chamber. 2 of the vacancies are in London: 1 based at Hatton Cross and the other at Taylor House. The third vacancy is based at Sheldon Court in Birmingham.

Who can apply

You are eligible to apply for this post if:

a) you are a solicitor, barrister or Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives with at least 5 years post qualification experience

b) you are an advocate or solicitor in Scotland of at least 5 years standing

c) you are a barrister or solicitor in Northern Ireland of at least 5 years standing

d) in the opinion of the Senior President of Tribunals, you have gained experience in law which makes you as suitable for appointment as if you satisfy any of the conditions at (a) to (c)

In addition, candidates should be able to offer a reasonable length of service, usually of 5 years, before the statutory retirement age of 70.

The Lord Chancellor also expects that candidates for salaried posts will have sufficient directly relevant experience sitting as a judge in a salaried capacity, or in a fee-paid capacity having completed 30 sitting days at the point of application. Only in exceptional cases and if the candidate in question has demonstrated the necessary skills in some other significant way should an exception be made.

About the role

The First-tier Tribunal, Immigration and Asylum Chamber is responsible for handling appeals against some decisions made by the Home Office relating to deportation from the UK; permission to stay in the UK; and entry clearance to the UK.

The post of Resident Judge exists at most major Immigration Regional Centres in the country. A Resident Judge will be expected to sit at least 50% of the time in the First-tier Tribunal, Immigration and Asylum Chamber, either alone or in developmental panels hearing substantive and more complex appeals. A Resident Judge is the principal at their assigned Regional Hearing Centre and will work closely with any Designated Judge or Assistant Resident Judge in the region.

In addition, the Resident Judge exercises a delegated responsibility from the President for the allocation of cases to Immigration Judges in the region. The Resident Judge is responsible for ensuring the efficient disposal of cases; maintaining and improving judicial standards; and liaising with the administrative staff on all aspects of case and general centre management.

 

Preparing your application

Throughout the selection process, candidates will be assessed against a competency framework specifically tailored to the role of a Resident Judge of the First-tier Tribunal, Immigration and Asylum Chamber. The competencies are aligned to the Judicial Skills and Abilities framework used by Judicial Office and Judicial College, and lists the ways in which a person demonstrates the required skills and abilities when working effectively in post.

As part of your application you will be required to provide, in no more than 250 words per competency, specific examples that demonstrate how your experiences make you suitable for the role. You are advised to start preparing your examples in advance, putting aside sufficient time to develop relevant examples that demonstrate your suitability for the post.
