The JAC has been asked to identify a candidate to recommend as Deputy Chamber President of the First-tier Tribunal, Health, Education and Social Care Chamber, Mental Health.
The Health, Education and Social Care Chamber is one of seven first-tier tribunal chambers, each of which combine jurisdictions with similar interests or operating practices. The Health, Education and Social Care Chamber encompasses Mental Health, Care Standards, Special Educational Needs and Disability and Primary Health Lists.
The successful candidate will support the Chamber President in managing the mental health jurisdiction, which is responsible for deciding upon the necessity for the continued compulsory detention of mentally disordered patients in hospital or the continuation of a conditional discharge, guardianship, or a community treatment order.
Subject to the agreement of the Chamber President and HMCTS, the successful candidate can be based at either the Manchester Civil Justice Centre or the Royal Courts of Justice in London.
Who can apply
You are eligible to apply for this post if you are a judge of the Upper Tribunal or:
a) you are a solicitor or barrister in England or Wales with at least 7 years post qualification legal experience
b) you are an advocate or solicitor in Scotland of at least 7 years standing
c) you are a barrister or solicitor in Northern Ireland of at least 7 years standing
d) in the opinion of the Senior President of Tribunals, you have gained experience in law which makes you as suitable for appointment as if you satisfy any of the conditions at (a) to (c)
